Seven Magic Mountains an Art Installation Made Up of 33 Colorful Boulder

If you lot've driven south of Las Vegas recently, you've probably wondered what the heck those ginormous neon-bright boulder towers were doing off Interstate 15.

Approximately 16 million cars will drive past the Seven Magic Mountains throughout the two-year period the land art stays in place off of Interstate-15 30 miles south of Las Vegas.

This much I know: It is nicer to look at than all the nasty billboards advertizement for exotic dancers and the myriad of ads for injury attorneys.

Vii Magic Mountains is a land fine art production created by Swiss-born artist Ugo Rondinone and co-produced by the Nevada Museum of Art and the Fine art Production Fund. The diverseness of colors and vividness stands in stark contrast to the muted colors of the desert, but information technology's almost reminiscent of the not-as well-far-away neon signage of Las Vegas.

It's ane of the largest country-based fine art installations completed in over twoscore years, and an estimated 16 meg vehicles will pass the structure over the ii-year menses it stays in place.

"Fine art is the bridge to connect northern and southern Nevada and assistance drag Nevada as a whole on the earth stage," said Amanda Horn, director of communications for the Nevada Museum of Fine art.

This weekend, mine was i of those 16 million vehicles. It'south quite a drive from the throughway, but getting upward close to the massive stones proves seeing them from a distance just isn't the same. In just a way that the desert could, it seems so much closer than it is. I approximate that's the mirage and the idea that you can never really understand art, a person or even life until you examine it closely and reflect upon it.

It was an experience I reflected on more after the fact. Of course, I took many photos, and my hair blew in my face as I posed for my Instagram-worthy picture. But, mostly, I was looking forrard to stopping at Raising Pikestaff's for dinner and Trader Joe's to buy a cactus.

As individuals, a lot of the times we just want to blend in, yet we also desire to be recognized for our uniqueness. One of my favorite characters on TV explained it well. Mitchell from Modernistic Family says something like, "As a kid, you never desire to exist considered weird. But as you get older, existence weird is what makes y'all who you lot are."

The seven towers don't shy away from that uniqueness. They cover it.

Rondinone created the slice to inspire others with the juxtaposition of the illustrative thirty- to 35-foot loftier sculptures in a desert landscape.

"Seven Magic Mountains elicits continuities and solidarities between the bogus and the natural, between human and nature," Rondinone said in a press release. "What centers this amalgam of contradictions is the spiritual aspiration; i that bruises, elevates and transcends."

With all the talk of natural being better than artificial, Rondinone blends the 2 in a place where patrons can visit for free.

Every bit I started the trek from the car, signs alarm of rattlesnakes and urging against trailblazing blared in front of me. Ane teenage daughter in a family of five wouldn't dare to get-go walking because of her sandals, just her dad pointed out that that adult white girl over at that place was wearing sandals, too. That was me. I didn't explain that he shouldn't trust me to know what I was doing in the outdoors, but we fabricated information technology out of there safely.

The family from Las Vegas was heading to California to become to Disneyland, and they had seen their friends' pictures on Facebook, so they scheduled a cease at the Seven Magic Mountains as function of their journey.

"I had to join the Seven Magic Mountains Society," said male parent Carlos Valdespin. "You lot don't get to meet things like this every day."

He posed with his family for a pic, with his ii sons sporting Star Wars T-shirts.

They aren't the just ones posting well-nigh the artwork on social media.

The Nevada Museum of Art is property an Instagram competition to see who can post the coolest photos with the hashtag #7MagicMountains. Horn said she's seen people doing yoga poses, dancing and fifty-fifty a DJ with his spin tables in forepart of the colorful backdrop. Finalists volition be selected each month and posted on the @nevadaart (Nevada Museum of Art) account and the @ArtProductionNy "(Fine art Production Fund) business relationship.

"It cuts across age lines and race lines because it's then unexpected and out of place in some ways, notwithstanding perfectly in identify," said Horn.

Everyone has felt out of place at some point. Either you lot've been shortest kid on the basketball team, or decided to exist an ugly mullet babe instead of flapper girl for the Halloween party.

The Seven Magic Mountains are a way to show that being weird and standing out is OK. In fact, it's encouraged. We can all get on board with that, right? Were they magical? I judge yous could say that.
